  1. I do not think its ethically acceptable to change someones appearance, because i believe that everyone is beautiful in their own unique way and by photoshopping it takes away that uniqueness and it alters the truth. Its also giving us a false image of beauty.
  2. Yes i think in every situation to manipulate someones appearance. But in some situations; like journalism, its even more wrong.
  3. I think any type of photoshop is fine, but once it gets into body and face manipulation i think its crossing the line.
  4. The difference between fashion photography and photo journalism is that fashion is trying to convince someone to buy a certain product that they are selling. Photo journalism is supposed to show the raw truth.
  5. Both types of photography show us how the world is in a way. Fashion photography tells young women how they should look and photo journalism shows us whats going on in the world.
  6. You are showing us these videos so we can see other types of photography.
  7. None of these videos are about guys because they aren't held to the same standard as girls. We are expected to look they way the models do, we are supposed to be what other people want us to be. They are sending us subliminal messages that unless we buy their products we won't be as pretty. Boys don't have to be pretty, if a guy does something wrong sometimes the finger points to a woman.

Magazines Part 2

  1. Early Magazine Covers- In the mid-1700s many of the "covers" where just the title and table of contents. When they did use covers they where just modeled after covers of books. Providing only the title and publication data. Later in the 1800s the covers where generic, which meant they  where decorated with leafy symmetry of victorian embellishments.
  2. Poster Cover- From the 1890s to the 1960s this type of cover dominated. These covers where so memorable on so many issues and magazines that its sometimes looked at as the standard on which covers have to measure up to.
  3. Pictures Married to Type- Covers from the 20th century that left a lasting imprint on the aesthenics sensibilities of an era. By the late 1800s cover lines appeared and in the early 1900s cover lines started the ongoing dialog that has been carried on since cover art.
  4. In the Forest of Words- Starting in 1937 and ending in 2001, the path is irregular and with many creative byways. There has been a general movement of magazine covers away from the artistic poster cover and toward covers that combine photography with font.

My Favorite Cover

Vogue, March, Power Issue
"Vogue’s annual Power issue features the actors, musicians, and personalities at the top of the cultural heap, and in 2013 no one held more social currency than Vogue’s March cover girl, BeyoncĂ©. For his spare but glamorous portrait, Patrick Demarchelier seems to capture all of the singer, business mogul, fashion icon, wife, and, mother’s multi-hyphenated talent and beauty in a single snap. It’s a picture as formidable, yet likeable, as “Queen Bey” herself."
I really like the portrait because obviously it has BeyoncĂ©, but i also like the lighting and her face is natural. But the cover describes her as 'Queen" and that she "Rules the world", but by her pose and face it doesn't seem like that. If you took the font off the first thing that would pop into my head wouldn't be "queen". Her pose and face make it seem like she isn't sure about herself, the pose would have been her looking strong, fierce, and independent; i would have described her as Queen. But by this pose and the way she looks isn't "Queen" worthy.

Magazine Tips

When doing a magazine cover there are 5 things i need to remember; the colors will dull when printed, try to have the cover pop from the background, font size, if it pulls people in, and if its interesting.

1.
A- #36 would be the most powerful image because he is in denial about his drug abuse, his father is conceded for his son. To me it looks as if Ian hit his breaking point, and just by looking at his face its like i can see it. Its like I'm seeing him break.

B- Set 1: #1 - #9
Set 2: #10 - #50
Set 3: #51 -#70
Set 4: #71 - #82

I think him being in basic training was the most powerful because there where a few images of him crying looking as if he was about to cry. He just wanted to leave most of the time and he had a lot of imageries and was on a lot of medication also.

C- These images show Ian's life for the past 2. 5 years. They tell us what his life was like and it showed us how he was feeling.

3.
A- When Ian is the main subject the captions are usually past tense.

B- The captions enhanced the photos by telling us what going one instead of us assuming what was happening.
