Final Exam Extra Credit

1.  The man was pushed onto the train tracks by a panhandler. Before the train had killed him a photographer tried to help him out, but he couldn't. So he took out his camera and tried to use the flash to warn the trains operator.

2. The photographer took the photo because he was trying to warn the trains operator with his flash.

3. I don't think the photographer should have taken the photo, i think he should have continued to try to get the man out.

4. I don't think he did the best he could have done because I'm sure a grown man should have gotten another man out of a hole, the older man wasn't dead weight. They could have easily worked together to get the man out of the trains pathway.

5. I don't think the New York Post should have ran this story. To me it really isn't news and it was an accident that happened. I think there are more important things to publish than a man getting killed by a subway.

6. For a photojournalist capturing the moment is very important, but i also think stopping and helping is important also.

7. I think it is personally ethical for the photographer to get involved, if they can stop and actually help the person, then i think they should. If they know they can't do anything the no, they shouldn't help.

8. To some extent i think they should avoid influencing the photograph, but if its a life of death situation and they can help, then they should get involved.

9. As an appropriate response, the photographer should apologize and say that they should have done more than just try to warn the operator. And they should say: "at the time it sounded like a good idea, but i should have tried harder to get him out."

Final Review

1.
Anjali Prashad holds a picture of her husband; Jainil, who she described as "Very loving and thoughtful." He died 3 years ago due to a sickness that swept through rural India.

In Vivi's mansion she hand makes her Christmas trees to look like a dress. The designer  says "Ive been donating this since design school when i was 20, but now its more elaborate."

Fashion

Changes done to the woman's face in "Dove Evolution":

  • Hair and makeup are done
  • Bigger Lips
  • Longer neck
  • Bigger eyes
  • Moved her eyes down
  • Slimmer neck
Changes with the Model's body(1):
  • Skin isn't discolored
  • Bigger lips
  • Bigger eyes
  • Smaller nose
  • Paler
  • Higher shoulder
  • Skinnier
  • Longer legs
  • Longer neck
  • Smaller feet
  • Smaller Butt

Changes with the Model's body(2):
  • Smaller butt, thighs, and calfs
  • Smaller arms
  • Bigger boobs
  • Smaller waist
  • Smaller head
  • Longer hair

  1. I do not think its ethically acceptable to change someones appearance, because i believe that everyone is beautiful in their own unique way and by photoshopping it takes away that uniqueness and it alters the truth. Its also giving us a false image of beauty.
  2. Yes i think in every situation to manipulate someones appearance. But in some situations; like journalism, its even more wrong.
  3. I think any type of photoshop is fine, but once it gets into body and face manipulation i think its crossing the line.
  4. The difference between fashion photography and photo journalism is that fashion is trying to convince someone to buy a certain product that they are selling. Photo journalism is supposed to show the raw truth.
  5. Both types of photography show us how the world is in a way. Fashion photography tells young women how they should look and photo journalism shows us whats going on in the world.
  6. You are showing us these videos so we can see other types of photography.
  7. None of these videos are about guys because they aren't held to the same standard as girls. We are expected to look they way the models do, we are supposed to be what other people want us to be. They are sending us subliminal messages that unless we buy their products we won't be as pretty. Boys don't have to be pretty, if a guy does something wrong sometimes the finger points to a woman.

Magazines Part 2

  1. Early Magazine Covers- In the mid-1700s many of the "covers" where just the title and table of contents. When they did use covers they where just modeled after covers of books. Providing only the title and publication data. Later in the 1800s the covers where generic, which meant they  where decorated with leafy symmetry of victorian embellishments.
  2. Poster Cover- From the 1890s to the 1960s this type of cover dominated. These covers where so memorable on so many issues and magazines that its sometimes looked at as the standard on which covers have to measure up to.
  3. Pictures Married to Type- Covers from the 20th century that left a lasting imprint on the aesthenics sensibilities of an era. By the late 1800s cover lines appeared and in the early 1900s cover lines started the ongoing dialog that has been carried on since cover art.
  4. In the Forest of Words- Starting in 1937 and ending in 2001, the path is irregular and with many creative byways. There has been a general movement of magazine covers away from the artistic poster cover and toward covers that combine photography with font.

My Favorite Cover

Vogue, March, Power Issue
"Vogue’s annual Power issue features the actors, musicians, and personalities at the top of the cultural heap, and in 2013 no one held more social currency than Vogue’s March cover girl, BeyoncĂ©. For his spare but glamorous portrait, Patrick Demarchelier seems to capture all of the singer, business mogul, fashion icon, wife, and, mother’s multi-hyphenated talent and beauty in a single snap. It’s a picture as formidable, yet likeable, as “Queen Bey” herself."
I really like the portrait because obviously it has BeyoncĂ©, but i also like the lighting and her face is natural. But the cover describes her as 'Queen" and that she "Rules the world", but by her pose and face it doesn't seem like that. If you took the font off the first thing that would pop into my head wouldn't be "queen". Her pose and face make it seem like she isn't sure about herself, the pose would have been her looking strong, fierce, and independent; i would have described her as Queen. But by this pose and the way she looks isn't "Queen" worthy.

Magazine Tips

When doing a magazine cover there are 5 things i need to remember; the colors will dull when printed, try to have the cover pop from the background, font size, if it pulls people in, and if its interesting.

1.
A- #36 would be the most powerful image because he is in denial about his drug abuse, his father is conceded for his son. To me it looks as if Ian hit his breaking point, and just by looking at his face its like i can see it. Its like I'm seeing him break.

B- Set 1: #1 - #9
Set 2: #10 - #50
Set 3: #51 -#70
Set 4: #71 - #82

I think him being in basic training was the most powerful because there where a few images of him crying looking as if he was about to cry. He just wanted to leave most of the time and he had a lot of imageries and was on a lot of medication also.

C- These images show Ian's life for the past 2. 5 years. They tell us what his life was like and it showed us how he was feeling.

3.
A- When Ian is the main subject the captions are usually past tense.

B- The captions enhanced the photos by telling us what going one instead of us assuming what was happening.

Self Portraits and Portraits Part 1 & Rules of Photography Part 2

Top 3 Tips

  • Framing the Subject
  • Play with Eye Contact
  • Experiment with Lighting

Environmental Photos
I like this photo manly because its outside in a field. I love natural lighting and seeing portraits  outside like this really gives it an earthy setting i love. If i had to take portraits they would be outside like this.
I really like this photo because this photo tells so many different stories about the subject. I feel like this photo invites me in, like the old man wants to tell his story. I also like this photo because i think the black and white really compliments it, i also like the background. The gates somehow add to it that i like.
Photography Self-portaits

I really like this photo because you can see a lot of the details of her face, by not having it a color photo it adds to the portrait. But i do wish they didn't cut of the top of her head, i think i would have liked the photo more.
I really like this photo because the mirror frames the subjects face, also its taken at a unique perspective.

Aperture, Shudder Speed, and ISO

1. We should closely relate aperture to the pupil.

2. The smaller the aperture the bigger the lens size, the larger the aperture the smaller the lens size.
3. Aperture affects depth of field because the the smaller lens is sharper than the larger lenses.

1. I would have to use a high shutter speed for the silver stars performance and the students dancing near the center of the court yard during the day when it was light outside. At the end of the night when it got dark, i would use a low shutter speed for for the people coming in through the front doors and and the booth near the middle of the court years under the tree.
2. The 3 setting for a camera regarding setting the shutter speed is "auto" mode, "Aperture Priority", and "Shutter Priority"/ "Manual". When that camera is in "Auto" mode, the shutter speed and the aperture are selected by the camera. In "Aperture Priority" the aperture is set by you and the shutter speed is set by the camera. "shutter priority'/ "manual" is when you manually set the shutter speed.
ISO 200
ISO 3200

1. When there isn't enough light you should use a higher ISO, like at a light night football game.

2. When there is enough light you should use a lower ISO. You also want to use it in dark/ dim environments.

3. When using a high ISO outdoors, don't use a flash.

Cancer Photos

1. As i looked at each image i got sadder and sadder the more i scrolled down. I felt the lump in my throat, like what you get when your about to cry.

2. I think the comment means that the cancer didn't define his wife. She just wasn't just a cancer patient, she was a person who was a cancer patient.

3. If i was in his situation i wouldn't be able to shoot photos like this, i would be an emotional wreck.

4. There wouldn't really be anything to say to him. He lost his wife and you can't really tell him anything that he doesn't know. Ya, he knows you sorry for him and at one point I'm sure he wants to stop hearing it.

Abandoned Amusement Parks

1. I would like to visit "Jazzland" Six Flags in New Orleans. I would like to visit the abandoned park because there is a chance i could get caught and that just adrenaline. I would take pictures of the water damaged rides and buildings. Especially at night so they look spooky.

2.

3. - Abandoned Mental
    - Abandoned Mission Schools
    -

4.

5. I want to take pictures of the abandoned asylums because i feel like how they look now really reflects what happened inside, especially the ones that where opened in the early 1900s. When you look at the pictures its like you can feel the horrible things that went on inside. Its like a weird 6th sense, you know what happened and how the patients where treated. You don't know the details but you know its gruesome. I want to take pictures because i want to capture the feelings of the asylum. I want to show what happened and how the patients where treated through picture.

6. To go i would need too fly to New Jersey to the Trenton State Hospital. I would need to have money for a few days of food and housing. I would take my camera, extra lenses, and memory cards. They have tours and it isn't illegal to enter the building.

Africa

1. When i read this article and saw the slideshow, i was amazed how detailed and how beautiful the photos were. I felt as if i was there, looking right at these magnificent animals. But i wonder how did he get so close to them without disturbing them? He said he was obsessed with their daily lives and routines hut by taking their pictures close to them will disturb them and it wouldn't really be their daily life.

2.

3. This photo is my favorite because its my favorite animal, and it just looks magical. When i first saw it, i thought it was fog resting on the elephant. But after reading the caption i realized it was just dust, but it still looks magical to me.

4. Simplicity and Framing is present in this photo. The photographer kept it simple and made it clear what the subject was, and the dust and the shadow frame the elephant.

5. Nick Brandt uses a medium format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses. This is important because all of his photos aren't in color and that means he is up close to the animals because he has no zoom.

6. He took these photos because when he was in Tanzania in 1995, he fell in love with the animals and landscape of East Africa.

7. he hoped to capture the animals feelings through photography.

8. "I love photographing in East Africa. But I like my clouds specially imported from Northern Europe - somber, gloomy, melancholic. Now, truth be told, the clouds in this photo are pretty obviously African - a classic stormy East African build up of cloudy drama." - Nick Brandt

Funny Captions

James, Bob, Ethel, and Joe (Left to right) mock the "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" pose but Ethel decided to go with the "don't-mess-with-me-if-you-know-whats-good-for-you" pose. The four are found in the park everyday, reminiscing about their high school years. James tells us "When i first met Ethel 50 years ago; She was like the devil, well she still is. But i accept it."
Rosie Smith poses in front of the "Adult Video" and "Live Nudes Shows" for us. She tells us "I love coming down to Thomas district, i love seeing these shows and videos. They make me feel young again. My husband; Marty used to come with me every saturday, but sadly he passed."

Lillian and Ellen White make a funny pose for us at the "DownTown Museum of Arts and Art History". Ellen tells us, "Lillian is my younger sister, in almost every photo we take together i do something to mess with her." Lillian also adds, "Then i get her back by sneaking bites of her desert when we go out to dinner every friday after we visit the museum."

Great White & Black Photographers Part 3

 1. I chose these images because they where very interesting and easily caught my eye. I chose these images because they are street photography, they where taken in the moment and i love it. Street photographers are my favorite.

2. If i was the subject in this photo i would be seeing the pale blue cloudless sky and the endless blue ocean in front of me. I would be smelling the salty air from the ocean and the clean air. I would be hearing the waves crash and move around me and the laughing and chatter of all the people around me. I taste the gritty sand and the salty air in my mouth and i feel the strong arounds hold me around my stomach.

If i was the subject in this photo i would be seeing my reflection threw the glass and i would be smelling the stale air inside the phone box. I would be hearing the voice giving the happy news that cause the huge smile on my face. I feel my hand get sweaty as i press it to the glass as it holds my body up.

3. I would like to have a blog for my pictures, i would like to create street photography and photography showing whats going on in the world.I want my photographs to be unedited. I want to show people whats going on in the world, i want to show them the people of the world also.

Photo Mural Project

1. We could do a theme similar to what Smith and Catelli did; everyday student and staff life.

2. I think we should open up to regular cameras. The students and staff that do not have a camera phones are still apart of bowie, even if they don't have camera phones they should still contribute.

3. I think the mural should be near the library, everyone would pass by it.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique

1. The challenges i faced while doing this shoot where the teachers. One of them welcomed me in nicely, but the others gave me attitude. I liked shooting the students and what they where doing but i disliked the teachers.

2. The technical aspects i focused on while doing this shoot was focusing the camera right. I wanted to make sure what i wanted was clear and looked nice.

3. If i could do this assignment again I would try and redo my angles.

4. I liked my lighting for my pictures, i would defiantly do the same thing again.

5. I think the lines and framing is easiest for me to achieve.

6. Rule of Thirds is the hardest for me to achieve.

7. i need to get more info on Rule of Thirds. The rule is still difficult for me to wrap my head around.

Catherine's Blog

1. She did really well on following the rules.
2. She also did well with focusing on the subject, i knew what it was.
3. Catherine could improve on the backgrounds. In some of the photos there are people back there and it kind of distracts from the photo, She could try getting the photo at a different angle to cover the non-improtant people.

Academic Shoot

Balance
1. I think i followed the rule pretty well, but i do think the room too cluttered. But the windows are bright and the room is dark.
2. The subject is the students, the eye automatically goes to the girl in the red. But she isn't the main subject.
3. I think its kinda clear, your eye does go to the girl in red and just stays in the students direction.
4. I could have chosen one student instead of having it at random.

Framing
1. I think i followed this rule very well. The bookshelves are a perfect frame for the subjects.
2. The subjects are the 2 girls sitting t the table in the center.
3. I think my subjects are very clear in this photo.
4. One thing i could have done different would be not being to far away form the subjects. I think the photo would have looked a lot better if i was closer.
Lines
1. With this rule i think i did pretty well.
2. the subjects are the tables in a line.
3. I think my subject is a bit fuzzy, my eyes go to the tables then the students.
4. I could have focused more one one or a few students instead of the whole room.
Rule of Thirds
1. I think i did ok with this rule, its not my best.
2. The subject is the girl in white in the front, and the 2 other students in the distance.
3. I think my subject is pretty clear, the main focus is on the girl in the front but also a little on the 2 other students.
4. I wish i took this at a different angle, i think the picture would have looked better.
Simplicity
1. This isn't one of the best either, i think it looks too cluttered.
2. The subject is the girl sitting in the middle at a table alone.
3. My subject isn't very clear, she's out of focus.
4. I could have made the girl in focus.

Academic Shoot Preview Assignment

Filling the Frame
The frame is dark all around but the purple galaxy looking thing illuminates the whole picture. The black is perfect for focusing on the purple.

Action and Emotion
The action and emotion is one of the girls is looking up at the bubbles with amazement, like its the most amazing thing she's ever seen. And the other girl looks so happy watching the bubbles.

The Story
This tells us that the students are praying or untiring together for something. Maybe a student or a teacher died or something.

_________________________________________________________________________________

I picked the photo of the boy pouring a green and a blue liquid in a beaker containing purple liquid. I picked this photo because its cool and it caught my eye. It follows the balance, but part of his head is cut out.
_________________________________________________________________________________

By looking at the photos today i would take pictures inside class rooms or students at clubs. I would probably go visit a chemistry class if they where doing a cool lab. To get amazing photos like that, i will try to get the whole picture and not cut anyone out.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. In the U.S it is a crime to manipulate images; but in the Middle East, more images are becoming manipulated recently. They are adding things to make the image seem like things are better or worse. and taking people out for whatever reason.

B. I think this type of photo editing is unethical because it isn't showing the truth. Some of the before and after images are showing little thongs being edited nor removed; like the missile launch or the oil field.

I think the Saddam and Bush Debate photo is the most unethical because this never happened. It is lying to the citizens of the U.S and spreading very false information.

I think the teeth fixing is the least unethical, it doesn't really effect any one. Its just a simple photoshop, it does lie to us and change our minds on her appearance but that doesn't effect our daily lives.

Post Shoot Refection

1. The challenges i faced while doing the photo shoot was trying not to get people or unwanted items in the photo.

2. While taking the photos i was worried about the framing and the lighting. I didn't want too many things in the photo distracting away from the subject. I also didn't want any of my pictures to be too light or too dark.

3. If i could go back i would fix the distractions in the photos.

4. I would do my lighting the same because i liked how it looked in my photos.

5. I achieved balance in my 'Bowie' photo, the lighting looks really cool. I so did pretty well with the framing part, most of my photos have a plant frame or some sort of metal frame.

6. I wouldn't be interesting in shooting the same prompts because i didn't really enjoy shooting them.

Ellies Photojournalism Blog

  • I really like your photos, they have great lines and simplicity. I can tell what the subject is and my eyes automatically goes to them.
  • In the square photo i couldn't really find the squares and my eyes automatically when to the girl playing with her hair. Next time try and get a different perspective.

9/11 Composition

Balance
This pictures balanced because the towers are geometric,
and there is enough room to see where the smoke is going.
Framing
The buildings are framing the smoke and the collapsing
building perfectly. The lamp posts also helps with the framing by
making more of a smaller frame around a smaller part of the smoke.
Lines
The smoke is in an perfect line, they are going
horizontal while the building lines are going
vertical. The lines on the buildings are also straight.
Rule of Thirds
Both the towers are off on the right side, my eye goes
automatically to it. There is enough room too see
where the smoke goes.
Simplicity
This is a great example of simplicity because the background
is plain and simple. My eye automatically goes to the subject.

Avoiding Mergers
This image cuts out a few people and the top of the building.
To make this a better photo, the photographer
should have taken a step out or zoomed out.

National Geographic

This is my favorite photo because the hummingbird really pops in the grey-white background. His irridesent chest looks more summery and warm with the gloomy and cold wealthier. In my world i would submit a photo of the Sun Dance in June. My mom practices the Lakota Native American Religion and she sometimes attends the Sun Dance. Ive been there once and it was amazing, mostly white but the culture was still there. I wish i had a DSLR at the time, there where so many beautiful photos i could have taken. Hopefully i have time the next June to go.

Touching People

1. i think the project is interesting, i don't like the images but its an interesting idea.

2. If someone approached me like that i would say no, I don't like being touched (unless i know you enough to feel comfortable around you). It would make me feel too uncomfortable.

3. I think an interesting photo shoot would be sitting two strangers down across from each other and they look at each other in the eye and tell them that they love them. I think taking a picture of the reactions would be amazing.

4. The photography makes me a bit uncomfortable, the peoples faces really scream 'I'm not comfortable' and it really shows.

I picked this photo because it speaks to me. As a child i was taught to love people, and that violence was wrong. I couldn't help but pick it because amongst the fighting there is a small child willing to show love and peace. The way the photographer took the photo really played a key role, in the second image its tilted up a bit more. As if you where looking at the police like you where the child. I think this photo made the cut because in the first image it looks like the father is telling the child to be kind, and the child's posture doesn't indicate them being hesitant or scared. And in the second image it looks as if the officer with the balloon is crying, or is about to cry. You can see the sadness in their eyes.
I picked this photo because it does show that we all need each other and that no matter what religion we are we should put that aside and be nice to each other. The way the man on the left is looking to the side like he is conceded really helped me pick this photo. When i saw it i thought that maybe he was looking to the side because he was making sure that all the muslims would be inside the circle. I think this made the cut because it really does show how we should treat each other. Religion, race, social ranking, ect. It really doesn't matter. If someone is in trouble we help them, we cannot stand aside, we are all human.
I picked this photo because its still relevant today. There are peace protests still going on and people are using love and peace instead of force like the officers are. I really like the perspective of this photo, it shows the girl and the officers. And it looks as if she is trying to talk to the officers and they are just there stone faced, like they have no emotion. I think this photo made the cut because it became a symbol of the flower power movement, and its still connected with peaceful protests.
